Is it ok to feed dogs only eggs and rice and veggies? I want to get away from feeding commercial dog foods..?
I have 7 dogs ranging from 35 to 55 pounds. I am through with commercial dog food due to contamination and questionable ingredients. I want to know if I feed them say, each 5 eggs, some rice, and a bend of veggies such as broccoli, carrots, parsley, and such if it will be nutritious enough for them to eat on a regular basis? The reason I choose eggs as the protein source is because I live in an area where I can set up a giant chicken coop area to harvest eggs daily. How does this sound, and any suggestions are welcome. I realize the eggs should be soft boiled according to BARF guidelines.. I also intend to supplement each meal with a helping of Missing Link Plus. Also will be able to add yogurt now and then.. I currently feed them Ol’ Roy from walmart, and recently there was a recall of it for salmonella contamination, my dogs ate some of this and had diarreah from it. Anything has to be better than that right? I cannot afford to buy Super Premium dog food for them, so this is an alternative I am exploring.. Thanks to everyone in advance!!
Eggs ARE meat.
These dogs are fully grown, by the way. Ages range from 2 years to 0ver 7 years.

Eggs, rice and veggies is not a complete diet. There is no calcium in this. Also no taurine, no organ meat.. etc. etc. You’re better off going straight to raw… it’s not expensive when you get the hang of it, I promise. I have 3 giant breed dogs and it costs me next to nothing to feed them raw… and it’s better for them too.
If you have any questions, please message me. I’m a Canine Nutrition Consultant and I’d really like to help you.
No, that is not a good diet. Dogs need MEAT and lots of it. If your going to quit kibble go raw. Do a yahoo search on feeding raw and how to do it properly.
Dogs don’t need grains, like rice. eggs are ok. Veggies arn’t necessary either. They NEED meat.
I would suggest talking to your vet about it. It usually depends on the breed, and the dog’s previous eating habits. Most dogs can’t change their eating habits over night, and end up getting really sick.
Good luck!!
Noo.
Dogs need a balanced nutrition. If you want to make your own dog food, do extensive research on how to make proper home made food.
Also, there are plenty of good holistic quality foods that are not expensive.
Wellness and Nutro are two good foods that are not too expensive.
At least toss in chicken OR lamb OR beef, OR BETTER YET go raw. Wolves don’t hunt broccoli or carrots. They eat MEAT. Old Roy is crap food but eggs and veggies with a dab of yogurt here and there isn’t much better. Oh, yeah, and missing link. Contact your vet, I am CERTAIN he or she could give you some pointers in this direction. By the way, it would be brown rice (not bleached white starch that we eat), peas, MEAT, and glucosamine and chondroitin. Check out Nutro Natural Choice and Nutro Max. And by the way, EGGS are mostly ALBUMIN not MUSCLE (MEAT) protien.
No, this is not a balanced diet as the canine needs meat protein and the eggs do not fulfill the amino acid profile needed. Taurine is found in muscle or organ meat.
If you can’t feed a complete raw diet (make sure you go to an expert on canine nutrition for a recipe if you do), there are a few very good holistic kibble types out there but….don’t be fooled by the ingredients because they can all look good but, look at the credentials of the formulator and how they check and test their sources for organics and purity. Also, go with one that is extruded (baked at low temperature for a minimal amount of time by friction) to be sure the nutrients and probiotics are intact. Another thing, make sure it is a fresh source, not sold in pet stores where it can go rancid from lack of climate controlled storage.
What you buy now, will ultimately save you on vet bills later.
I think it would be fine if it agrees with all of the dogs. You might want to substitute some liver, sardines or ground beef a few times a week for variety.Oh,and use brown rice, not white.
Edit: Eggs contain a perfect balance of amino acids, fatty acids and protein. I agree that you may need to add a vitamin/calcium supplement,so you should ask your vet.

your diet sounds about right but its missing some important things, i’ll tell you the diet i give my dogs (these are fully grown GSD’s), seeing that your dogs are 35-55 pounds, they would be less than a year old, and will need 2-3 meals a day, depending upon the activity they get, here’s how it goes:
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
morning (when he got up 6am)
one small bowl of milk (he loved that stuff)
at around 8.30 am
4 slices of white premium quality white bread mashed in with 4 organic white eggs
6.30-7.00pm (dinner)
half a pound of premium white chicken breast shred and mix with either rice or any other variation he liked
once a month for dinner he used to get red meat (usually goat meat or lamb meat, again very high quality)
Monday, Tuesday
6.00am
small bowl of milk
8.30am
6eggs (only 2 yolks)
6.30-7.00 pm
cooked rice mixed with loads of veggies.
and every night around 10pm i used to give him about 5 dog biscuits (that was just out of pure love)
if you must introduce a 3rd meal, separate the meals by 5 hours, but i’ve seen in my experience, that adding meat to a dogs diet does wonders for their health.
and JSYK, eggs are not meat, they are eggs, they don’t have flesh.
here are some home made dogfoods

Ingredients
1 lb ground beef
1/2 lb ground chicken
1/2 lb ground turkey
1 lb baby carrot
2 small baking potatoes
3 cups brown rice
3 eggs, slightly beaten
3 cups chicken broth
2 cups water
Directions
1Cook all 3 ground meats together in larger 6 quart dutch oven.
2Add rice, chicken broth and water. Cook on medium heat for 30 minutes.
3Add potatoes and carrots, and slightly beaten eggs. Cook for an additional 20 – 30 minutes.
4After cooking, put mixture into storage containers. This freezes very well.
Ingredients
2 1/2 lbs ground chicken or ground turkey (2 20 oz. packages.)
4 (15 ounce) cans no-salt-added vegetables
1 1/2 cups raw brown rice
1 bunch fresh parsley
Directions
1This recipe, as is, yeilds approximately 4-5 quarts, which is more than a small or medium-sized dog can consume while it remains good in the refrigerator. Therefore, the first step is to go to the dollar store and buy 8-10 pint-sized freezer containers. Heck, spend a lot more money and buy tupperware if you want. Or if you are particulary ambitious, pack the finished product into canning jars and seal them. I prefer to just freeze it in pint containers until ready for use.
2Open the cans of veggies and drain the liquid into the largest measuring cup you have, as much as possible. You should get about 3 cups of liquid but if not, add water to make exactly 3 cups.
3Put the liquid into a 5-quart dutch oven on the the stove and bring to a boil.
4Add the brown rice, stir, cover, and turn to low heat. Set the timer for 45 minutes. If it gets done before you are done with the next 2 steps, just move it aside somewhere off the heat without removing the lid or disturbing it in any way.
5While you are waiting on the rice, cook the chicken or turkey meat in a frying pan until completely done. Transfer it into a fine-mesh colander and place in the sink to let the liquid drain out while the rice is cooking.
6If you are using vegetables that have pieces larger than 1/2" then you need to use this time to cut them down further. For example, my dogs love beets but the only salt-free variety I can find are sliced beets. I chop the slices into small dice, and I do the same with the green beans.
7Also use this time to prepare the parsley. This part is important. First clean it as you normally would, then remove all the large stems so that what you have left are just the tiny sprigs. Then transfer the sprigs to your food processer. If you don’t have one, get out your biggest, sharpest knife and start chopping. The parsley needs to be VERY finely chopped. If not, you will find it all over the floor after Fido’s feeding time. Babies don’t like the texture of whole parsley and will spit it out. It is, however, good for their breath and digestion and it’s very low-cal.
8When the rice is done and has been taken off the heat, open the lid and add the meat, stir well.
9Add all the vegetables, stir well.
10Add the parsley. Mix thoroughly.
11Pack the mixture into pint-sized containers and store properly, keeping one out for immediate use.
If you are going to have your own chicken you might as well raise them to feed to the dogs. I’ll start this for the other barf feeders on my contacts as I am going to be doing prey model – no vegetation save fore the stomach contents of a rabbit or guinea pigs.
Just feed them the whole chicken. Eggs, rice, and veggies are not balanced.
Coly told you right. I suggest doing some research on feeding raw Here are a few sites to help you:
Dogs are supposed to have meat, Bones, and Organs, preferably fresh, wholesome, and unprocessed. This is why many feed a homemade raw diet.

A raw diet is typically cheaper than kibble worth buying.
For a dog fed raw, it is typically 2 to 3 percent of the dogs ideal body weight. If the dog is a pup(under 18 months for most dogs) it can be around 10% of the dogs body weight. Most raw feeders start at one percentage and adjust it as needed.
This site can tell you some great info about dogs and their diets.
