Rx dog food w/organic ingredients?
by admin on Wednesday, July 28th, 2010 | 3 Comments
I have been feeding my Terrier an organic raw diet for dogs who suffer from allergies. Recently, my vet allerted me to a potential kidney problem after doing blood work & urinalisys and suggested I change her food to a Rx kidney friendly food. (She’s 10 and otherwise healthy.) He was aware of 2 brands: Purina NF & Science Diet KD. Both are made with corn, which is a big allergen for her.
I would love to find an organic, corn free kibble that is formulated to be gentle on the kidneys. (Especially in light of the recent Menu foods horror.)
We travel a lot & I’m not ready to start cooking for her.
Does anyone have any ideas about alternative pet food companies that can give me what I’m looking for?
Thanks in advance!

Greetings !!
As a fellow pet (dog with allergies) owner, you are in the same position we found ourselves in. My wife spent weeks researching dog food brands and the Wellness brand clearly stood out as a winner.
A little known fact concerning dogfoods is that nearly 90% of all dogfood BRANDS are made by the same manufacturing company.
Wellness is different. There are no harmful ingredients used by wellness. Many (arguably) unhealthy ingredients are added to dog foods under misleading titles. Follow this link to a great article describing the ingredients titles – http://www.diamondsintheruff.com/foodchoices.pdf
Wellness is a winner and is not that much more expensive. Pay attention to recommended serving sizes as this food requires less food to provide the same level of nutrition.
Yes, PLEASE stay away from Purina and Science Diet! Those companies, and all other grocery brand pet foods, make nothing but meat-flavored cereal for pets, full of disgusting animal by-products, cancer-causing artificial preservatives, etc. etc. etc. It’s "edible" to pets, but it’s certainly not FOOD.
So, here’s what you need to think about, since your dog has kidney problems:
Make SURE that your dog gets PLENTY of water, which means adding water to her kibble if you’re going to feed her regular dry food (which I wouldn’t suggest in her case), or continuing to feed her raw foods and canned foods.
If you DO feed her any kibble, make sure that it’s low in phosphorous, magnesium, sodium, and ash. Basically, the percentages on all of those (except for ash) need to be less than 1.0%, but much lower than that even, if possible. On the ash, try to stay below 3% if possible.
Look up Grandma Lucy’s Artisan dog foods. Chicken has the lowest counts on all of those things that I just mentioned, plus it’s not too high in protein (which is definitely a MUST in any dog or cat’s diet, but when it comes to pets who have existing kidney problems, slightly lower protein is better), so it’s an excellent flavor choice. It’s a freeze-dried, completely natural, extremely limited ingredient dog food, and a 3 lb. bag of it makes about 17 lbs. of actual food once you’ve added water to it. It’s the best all-natural food that I can think of for your dog’s issue, plus it’s really easy to travel with!
Also, as I said before, feeding her raw and canned food is great. Make sure that you check the percentages of those ingredients that I mentioned before on the canned foods, though. If you can’t find the percentages on the can, don’t be afraid to call the company and ask for that information! Also, be sure that the canned food is all-natural, but I think you already know that.
I hope that helps!
Our dog loves their products. Their foods are fresh with no preservatives. I order a 20 pound bag online about every 6 weeks and it arrives in about two days. It’s only a little more expensive that grocery store food, but I think you have to feed much less because it’s all good nutritious ingredients without fillers. They have several different kinds and some without corn. You can get sample bags of all their products, You do have to pay, but at least for trying out some, you don’t have to make a big investment. They do have a 100% satisfaction guarantee. I think you’ll be very happy with their products. By the way, they sent out an email assuring all their customers that their products were not involved in the recent scare.
They even have a 10% off sale right now and did I mention free shipping? And no, I’m not an employee – just a happy customer.
