In recent months, levels of aflatoxin at a dangerously high level were detected in a number of dog food brands including the so-called premium labels. Liver cancer is known to be a possibility after consumption of fungi like aflatoxin.

These problems have caused concern in many pet owners. Because of these issues, a raw meat diet for dogs is now gaining support among pet owners.

It is no surprise that the commercial pet food industry does not want pet owners to consider abandoning their products. With billions in sales each year, they don’t want to see reduced profits obviously. Some of the large pet food manufacturers are actually warning pet owners to not try a raw diet, suggesting there are many risks involved.

However, pet owners who have switched to feeding a diet closer to what their pet’s ancestors would have eaten are pointing to some major benefits. These benefits for their pets include:

• Improved coat and skin, sometimes with skin issues completely disappearing
• Less requirement for water
• Vast improvement in the stool (fecal matter)

These are but a few of the benefits. The pet food industry retorts that this is just anecdotal evidence and don’t want you to think that there is any real benefit to a raw meat diet. One of the risks, according to them is of bacterial infection and contamination of raw meat.

While it is true that the evidence is mostly anectodatal, those of us who are nervous about what is going into commercial pet foods have nothing else to go by. It is doubtful that the animal feed producers will be funding studies that put their product up against what canines have been eating forever.

Feeding your dog a raw meat diet is not that difficult. Those who have gone beyond the hesitation in feeding raw are discovering that they can trust their own food preparation over that of the commercial dog food suppliers.

In another controversy, pet food labelling is very misleading in that they are designed to lead you to believe meat is the primary ingredient. But it is false that most commercial dog foods are primarily made of of meat. Combined, the total weight of all the other ingredients including grains outweighs the amount of meat in dry kibble.

Raw bones are an essential part of a raw meat diet. In the wild, relatives of domesticated dogs obtain vitamins and minerals from chewing and consuming raw bone material. Many think that feeding raw bones to pets is dangerous. It is if the bones are cooked! The cooking process makes the bones harder and more prone to splintering. Digestibility of uncooked bones by dogs is very good. Clean white teeth with no tartar is another perk of feeding raw bones.

Although some veterinarians will also give warnings about feeding raw (remember though, they are sponsored by the big pet food companies), it’s been admitted that they really don’t have that much nutritional training and those who feed raw seem to have less vet visits needed!
